The UCLU 2006 Show got off to rather a slow start. Having critiqued a number of shows over the years, the traditional show forumla has always been to open with an uptempo number that gets the audiences' feets tapping.
I have to admit a slight bias in that I attended UCL myself studying journalism in my younger years. However, what has always impressed me with UCL Shows of the past has been the specific formula that has been applied to each Show, without regard for the norm. The showcase piece of every UCL Show, especially in the past three to four years has always been the drama. This year was no different. But with one exception. And his name was Shaun Fernando. His stage presence playing the role of 'Amma' in the drama was stupendous. He lifted scenes that would otherwise proved to have watchable, but nothing more. Highlight performances like this are the building blocks from which greater careers are launched.
I was fortunate this year to catch the Show on the Gala night. Effectively the second night on which the Show runs. In some ways this gives the participants of the Show a day to get routines down to pat and to iron out those glitches.
As such, I was rewarded with a strong overall Show but with an especially enjoyable drama. Although the actors for the most part must take the credit for this, this was a drama that was especially well scripted. I tip my hat to the script writers for a job well done.
Some people have commented that the Show was perhaps 'limp' in terms of delivery. I have to disagree. Admittedly this Show was not on the same scale as Mega Maalai but that particular Imperial Show was what I would regard as a once in a blue moon in terms of scale and performance. The UCL Committee should be proud of themselves for putting on a throughly enjoyable drama with some strong supporting acts. Most notably the 'Bollywood Medley' by the Balendra sisters and the 'Nightmare on Sesame Street' dance. I certainly could not have thought of a better way of my wife and I spending a Saturday evening and as a loyal UCL alumni - look forward to next year's Show.
The UCLU 05/06 Commitee would like to thank everyone for their support in the making of the Show. Dj's on the night were Chippie & The U.K.T. Music for the after party was provided by Nocturnal Sounds. TO VIEW MORE PHOTOS FROM THE EVENT CLICK THE LINK BELOW: <<IMPERIAL LIGHT>> |
