IMPERIAL COLLEGE SRI LANKAN SOCIETY
Sapphire 2008
The Annual Charity Ball
Saturday 23rd February 2008
TROXY - LONDON

The annual Sapphire ball organised by The Imperial College Sri Lankan Society is one of the most anticipated Sri Lankan university events of the year, which draws in a loyal following of international and home students in the UK. Organised this year in aid of Maharagama Hospital in Sri Lanka, the event was held at the breathtaking Troxy, a 1930’s art deco Grade II Listed building in East London.

Previous university events held at the Troxy include shows & after parties but the venue is ideally suited for Balls. The stunning art deco fixtures accompanied by the amazing in-house lighting and sound system, makes this the ideal setting for Sapphire 2008. The evening began with the lighting of the lamp by Co presidents Kushala Abeysekera and Praveen Dias, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the UK and Desmond De Silva.

Sapphire events in the past have showcased professional Sri Lankan artistes including the Gypsies, BNS & Krishan Maheson, who were flown in to perform at the events. This year was slightly different with all the acts chosen to perform being Sri Lankan’s based in the UK, including up & coming artistes Rosh & Dan (RND) and veteran performer Desmond De Silva. DJ’s on the night including Imperial college’s Dj Santi & BBC Radio 1’s DJ Nihal.  Sapphire has been steadily growing from strength to strength and this years organising committee has set the standard for future societies to follow.
