LONDON MELA
GUNNERSBURY PARK : W3
SUNDAY 14TH AUGUST 2005

You're probably wondering why SL2UK are featuring the London Mela, and what it's got to do with UK Lankans. Well if you didn’t know, get to know.
According to the brochure, The London Mela is an ''artistically-led, multi art form festival, which celebrates the culture and creativity of London's Asian communities and the global Asian Diaspora''. From the Sanskrit 'to meet', the Mela is a big bash for South Asians in London featuring twelve zones including five stages of classical & contemporary music, dance, visual arts, circus and street theatre.

MAIN STAGE

The reason SL2UK popped down was investigate the hype surrounding a guy called DJ Nihal. Nihal along with Bobby Friction host the Radio 1 Bobby & Nihal Show. They are big names in the Asian music scene here in the UK...And also have a strong global presence.

Nihal & Bobby Friction

Nihal himself is in fact Lankan so I felt it only right to feature him on our site. I got to hear about this guy a year ago when he was on a late night channel 4 show...not that kinda show! I can't remember what the show was about but I do remember being quite stunned. I was thinking to myself, ‘Who is this Asian guy chatting about Lankan Hip hop and how does he know that theres loads of talent coming out of Colombo'. Well he's right, there's loads and they're HOT. I contacted him and he gave me a few links to check out. That's a different story altogether...Stay tuned to SL2UK.com.

The LONDON FLAVAS stage about to battered by Mother Nature

Nihal and Bobby hosted the LONDON FLAVAS stage at the Mela and with their guests kept the crowd in Awe. Their guests included Mentor Kollektiv, Catch 22, Punjabi Hit Squad, Ms Scandalous, Swami, Taala, Pandit Dinesh & the poster boy of British Bhangra 'Juggy D'.

Catch 22  ft Zane

I got to say this guy knows how to work the crowd, and especially an asian crowd. Plus he actually knows what to drop and how to mix it. I love the way he interacts with the crowd and gets them to feel his passion for the music. Keep it up mate.

Pandit Dinesh : A Master Musician

The Highlight of the day for me was when Pandit Dinesh was on stage jamming with Bobby and Nihal. Bobby & Nihal would drop some of their latest tracks while Pandit would beat it on his drums. It was awesome.

The day was awesome and I would recommend checking this event out next year. But in the meantime tune or log onto the Radio 1 Bobby & Nihal show every Wednesday night from 9 till 11 .You will not be disappointed. Enjoy the rest of the photos from the day.

Dance troupes at the Community stage. Routines from young Bollywood & street dancer's alongside B Boys & DJ's

Isn't that the guy from Eastenders signing autographs...

Last year attracted over 60,000 visitors... I didn't have time to count this year

The Main Stage was the biggest crowd puller with Acts like Raghav, Allap, Malkit Singh & DCS
