The Hammersmith Palais has long been one of UK's most legendary venues playing host to the most important music acts and genres that have swept the UK in the past 100years.

The audacity then, of Imperial College International Tamil Society (ITS) to take this venue as the backdrop to their 2006 Mega Maalai Show was indeed a brave, and some might even say foolish choice.

I am happy to report the ITS Committee took on the Palais, and made the venue their own one night hosting a musical and dance extravaganza to over 800 people in the packed out venue. They left their critics in no doubt and set a very high standard by which all other Lankan Shows this year will no doubt be judged.

Radio 1 DJ, Nihal, opened the Show and on true legendary form, working up the crowd with practiced ease for the acts
that were to follow.

The calibre of these acts was extremely high when considering for all accounts and purposes, this was an amateur production put on by University students. There were many fantastic performances with highlights including the amazingly choreographed ‘Then, Now, Forever Fashion Show’ and  ‘The Three Elements’ Grande Finale.

It was ultimately down to the hardwork and dedication of the ITS Committee, as well as their supporting cast of choregraphers, performers and back stage crew that brought such a fantastic production before your eyes.

One name kept coming up again and again however in interviews with various people regarding the Show. Presidents come and go…However, there are no doubts in peoples' minds that Annakan Navaratnam put a stamp on his Presidency over the past year, leaving rather large shoes to fill for his successor.

The Lankan rumour mill would suggest that Annakan could be back for another term…As he confided with a colleague of mine recently however, regardless of whether he is at the helm of this magnificent ship or not, the Show must go on. And that IS something we can all look forward to next year.

All proceeds from this year’s Show will be going to numerous charities including Tamil Aid, Rama Krishna Students Mission and the British Red Cross.

The ITS Committee would like to give a special thanks to all those people that supported the Show, including those who attended , and those people who were involved with the making of the Show itself.
