Popularity for Face Off has increased over the years so much so that the event has the potential of moving away from being a Sri Lankan/Tamil society event to a UK wide university event. The competition comprises of 3 elements that include music, dance and fish cutlets! Yes you read correctly. Universities have to enter a music act, a dance act and also a person of incredible stamina, strength and agility to scoff down South Harrow food & wine’s home made fish cutlets in a short period of time.
The 5 judges, made up of professionals in the Media & entertainment industry had a hard job this year as the standard was pretty high, with music & dance acts incorporating elements of eastern and western styles. Imperial College London walked away as the winners of the music section. The act consisted of a female vocalist, a male bass vocalist and a Beat-boxer, went down well with judges and audiences because of the quality and simplicity of the performance.
QMW won the best dance act for their performance which incorporated elements of tribal belly dancing, street, Bharatanatyam and Dapang Koothu. Choreogrpahed by AZma Shiyam, Shindy Ratnaselvam & Mayuran, the judges were impressed by the attention to detail, from the matching henna on the belly dances, to the selection of songs used. Brunel university won the cutlet eating competition.
