The Face-Off 2006 TUESDAY 7TH March The Clapham Grand
Review : Ria Balasubramaniam
Kings College Sri Lankan Society decided to mix things up. Because of the number of Shows that take place this time of the year, it almost made sense to have a 'Best of the Best'. Especially with the number of quality acts that are showcased at the various Shows.
One of the highlights of the Show were the compere pairing of Kajol and Binara. They had a charisma and stage presence which other Shows have certainly lacked this year. This writer would not be particularly surprised if they called the Stage their second home.
The Acts for the Face-Off 2006 were understandably quite good as they effectively featured the very best Acts of the various people that take part in their respective University Shows.
There was also the small matter of pride at stake as each University competed against the other for the coveted crown of Face-Off Champions 2006 in the two categories of Music and Dance.
Abi Gnanasampanthan was again a stand-out performer with a medley of hits that were performed in several languages. The UCL girls that sang after Abi would have had a tough time following her, and though she did not win the music category, Abi is a name we can count on to crop up again.
One of the stand-out male (and arguably overall) vocal performances came from Mayuran Kathirkamanathan of Kings College University. This writer was certainly surprised that Kings did not win the Music category as well as the Dance (which by the way was superb) but ultimately this was a decision left to the judges on the day.
The very talented Daniel Gavette and Roshan Goonawardena of Imperial.
The UCL performance
The dance performances for me were the more enjoyable of the night between the two categories at stake at this year's Face Off. This is a personal preference more than anything as I am a keen Bharatha Natyam dancer myself.
Gotta love those 'City' jeans
The ubiquitous Funkology were again on hand to deliver another amazing performance to kick start the dance category. For those not in the know, Funkology is the resident Imperial University Dance crew who are professionals in their own right.
Ultimately however, the Dance Category judging perhaps was slightly easier as there was a clear winner with Kings taking the crown by a margin in the voting.
The clever use of various forms of dance and especially linking the ballerina through the various set pieces was very clever. Very 'Save The Last Dance' if you needed a good frame of reference.
