Queen Mary’s Tamil society (QMTS) kicked off the university show calendar with The Demise, held at the magnificent and classy venue - Troxy.

The QMTS show is well known for their renowned comedy sketches amongst the wide variety of dance and music performances. This year they decided to go for a more serious approach compared with their outright comedic performance last year in The Breakout.

With the return of Anujen Vijayarahaven and Jason Eswaran, whose previous acting performances become more apparent with their striking familiarity with the stage, they have extraordinary presence as Maddy and Master Bates.  Along with an entourage of newcomers, including the society’s president Muralietharan ‘Muz’ Yoganathan as the cool and composed Dillon and the stunning Simi Sivapalan, their drama involved a murder mystery amongst ten strangers on a remote island. Technical hitches and gaps within the drama occurred which did tend to prolong the show to some extent. However with a clever storyline, a battle between two cross dressers and an unexpected twist at the end, the drama proved to be entertaining for the audience.

Queen Mary’s Tamil students are infamously known for their gaana dancing. Therefore it was no surprise that they managed to provide yet more amazing gaana performances!

Unnakum Ennakum Something Something was choreographed by Rathi Buvanendra, Kalyani Puvanendrampillai and Mathan Uthayanan. Their vibrant costumes added colour to the stage, and the outstanding dance routine and good choice of classic songs were more than enough to get the crowd cheering.

Definitely a case of ‘saving the best till last’, the gaana finale was extremely energetic and with the dynamic choreography, it was a great way of ending the show on a high!

This year lacked the musical variety compared to previous shows as there was only one live vocal duet.  However there was a wide range of dance performances, from hip hop, to street and even to belly dancing!

QMTS have set the standards and so the university show season begins and we look forward to appreciating the exceptional talent of university students today!

Congratulations to the QMTS committee and good luck for the future!
