DJ NIHAL'S
BOMBAY BRONX

Tuesday 16th May 2006

We've come a long way baby...

For the minority of attendees that came to the Bombay Bronx last night (and you know who you were), that were blissfully unaware before they arrived that the 16th of May was a special night. No it wasn't the new season of  Lost that had started again on C4...

Nihal, Rishi Rich & Jay Sean performing on the night

The 16th commemorated the 2nd year of the Bombay Bronx started by Radio 1 DJ Nihal to raise money for the victims of the Tsunami. Nihal has achieved a great feat in making the Bronx what it is, but more importantly for donating all monies raised to a very worthwhile cause. The generosity of this man knows no bounds as he donated £2,000 to the Tear Drop Charity last night.

Yup you read that right mate...£2,000

When Nihal got up on stage at 10.30pm or so to warm up the crowd for the live acts to follow he could have opened with a number of comments on the success of the Bronx monthly nights. For all that Nihal has achieved though, what was especially noteworthy was that he BEGAN by giving props to the people that have made the Bronx what is. The audience. Those people that have attended month after month and supported.

The Bronx began back in May 2004 but only really exploded however at the start of 2005 through word of mouth more than anything. It now represents one of the key nights on the asian-music scene as it has gone from strength to strength. Key features that have brought in the Asian diaspora month after month are not the Asian 8 Miles though this has proven to be a immensely popular  hit, but the cool crowds and the regular attendance of industry insiders including pop stars, producers, MC's, and Bollywood DJs.

                                                 Some familar faces

Last night was no different and the tracks the DJ's dropped were heavier than ever. Big shout out to Ameet Chana, DJ P and K2 for bringing the place alive...There were also exclusive performances by Jay Sean from his forthcoming album, and some heavy beats dropped by world-renowned producer Rishi Rich. All in all the crowd had an amazing time and were even treated to a session by Nihal as he demonstrated his own MCing skills.

A packed out venue last night at the Bronx.

What people I spoke to commented on was the fact that in contrast to all the other Asian events out there, the night is completely chilled out but with a very unique vibe. It's something to do with the venue...But more to do with the people. One guy asked me whether I could recommend any other nights like this in London....I told him to come to the Bronx in June. Peace. Love.

The rather suave looking Asian diaspora

A lot of things have changed in Nihal's life over the past couple of years....He got married. Got a new hairstyle and EVEN grew some designer stubble...The one thing that has remained the constant however is the Bronx...It's his little baby...Nihal you should be proud mate. Because that baby did good.
